Elements of Meaning Systems

I have mentioned that the dimensions along which meaning systems will be analyzed are comfort or hope, explanation, and religiosity (supernaturalness). The structure of my analysis, however, will proceed along substantive lines. Meaning systems are positions on a number of subjects or issues of “ultimate concern”. These are the existential questions to which Daniel Bell (1977) suggests answers must be advanced. The meaning-related subjects I will explore in this section include deities, the universe and the world, evil and suffering, the nature of mankind, death and the afterlife, and, as a consequence of approaches to these matters, the purpose and meaning of existence. I will then explicate several alternative meaning systems to which unreligious people might be especially likely to adhere.
